How do you read papers without drowning? I keep getting stuck in the related work
Second year, trying to read a paper a week. I get lost in the related work and never reach the method. Is it normal to skip it on the first pass?

Skip it. Abstract, figures, method, results, then go back for related work only if you need to place it. Three passes, not one.
